Central European Forum for Migration and Population Research
Warsaw, Poland

Central European Forum for Migration and Population Research (CEFMR) was created in 2002 as a research partnership of the Swiss Foundation for Population, Migration and Environment (PME), Institute of Geography and Spatial Organization of the Polish Academy of Sciences and International Organization for Migration (IOM), managed by the Warsaw Office of the latter, which also represents CEFMR in contractual matters.

At the end of 2008 PME terminated its involvement in the CEFMR activities and core funding, since its aims (setting up a research unit and enhancing the scope and quality of migration research in Central Europe / Poland) had been met. CEFMR continues to funcion within a new institutional setting.

CEFMR has the following aims:

  1. Research on various aspects (sociological, political, demographic, geographic, economic, legal, etc.) of internal and international migration;
  2. Disseminate the results of the research;
  3. Create and provide resources necessary for research;
  4. Establish a Documentation Centre specialized in migration;
  5. Organize training sessions and programmes on topics related to migration;
  6. Foster international co-operation in research and dissemination of results;
  7. Co-operate with and advise on migration issues to Polish and other authorities.

The area of research, in geographic terms, by mandate focuses predominantly, but not exclusively, on Central and Eastern Europe.

CEFMR specialises in multidisciplinary research on international migration in Central Europe. It conducts research in demography, population statistics, modeling of migration and population, geography, migration policies, sociology and economics.

As a joint project, CEFMR has access to cumulated knowledge of parent organizations, in particular to over 50 years long expertise of International Organization for Migration, a leading global player in the field of international migration and to broad research expertise in Central and Eastern Europe of the Institute of Geography and Spatial Organization of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

Since November 2004, CEFMR has been a partner institution of the Swiss Forum for Migration and Population Studies (SFM) in Neuchâtel (more...).

Since 2006, the Forum has been invited to participate in the IMISCOE Network of Excellence as an Associated Member.
