Research Project S07

Europeanization of the German Immigration Policy

Project Manager: Monika Mazur-Rafał

Europeanization is presently one of the most important tendencies shaping migration policies in Europe. Three dimensions of the process can be observed: firstly, a common legal framework in immigration policies, being built at the EU-level, determines the developments in the national migration policies (a top-down approach). Secondly, the EU member countries influence the common immigration policy of the EU (a bottom-up approach). Thirdly, some EU-member countries tend to spontaneously copy some solutions which proved to be effective in other countries (a horizontal approach).

The project aims to analyze these directions from a theoretical point of view, and on the example of one EU-member country (Germany). In the theoretical part it will seek to clarify the concept of Europeanization, whereas in the German case study it will focus on the three dimensions of the process. On this basis, the conclusions on the role of Germany in the shaping the common immigration policy of the EU will be drawn.

The project is financed by Attorney Office Gardocki and Partners.
